Two major considerations drive where and how you hang your artworks: aesthetics and care of the artwork.
The placement of an artwork is crucial to its protection as direct light and exposure to humidity can destroy your art. An ideal temperature is 20C and relative humidity of 60% should be the aim.
Household chemicals like room deodorisers, smoke from open fires etc are obvious hazards to unframed works so location is critical.
Decorating and your artworks
Achieving impact and fit is a balance between the work, other artworks that are within view and the surrounding decorations and furnishings. Very colourful artworks can compliment your decor and colour scheme by matching or contrasting. Similarly a very dramatic, large canvas can create mood and certainly a focus to an otherwise bland room.
Picture lighting can contribute to featuring your artwork, being careful to position any lighting to ensure no direct heat. Where colour is a strong creative technique in the artwork, gentle light on the painting provides a dramatic and enhancing effect.
