Ron Reynolds Artists Notes

More > Ron paints mainly semi-abstract images built upon figurative studies drawn from life. Most works are completed in the studio from reductive compositional drawings. His paintings have a strong underlying structure achieved by line and colour.

Semi-abstract painting is a rather broad area that lies between the two extremes of designed realism and non-objective design; somewhere between Andrew Wyeth and Piet Mondrian. This broad area allows the painter considerable leeway in relation to these two extremes.

Semi-abstraction is not a style, it is a viewpoint on nature, that results in paintings that integrate identifiable subject matter and formal design structures. This integration establishes an independent equilibrium between nature and design in which neither dominate.

Colour can also be exploited by using the fullness and intensity of flat areas: simultaneous contrast and optical vibration. The artist employing these means can liberate colour from the constraints of representation.

Semi-Abstraction Applied

The aim in semi-abstraction painting is to find the 'middle ground' or balance between nature and design. The landscape is like a series of shape relationships in which you actively explore the shape possibilities inherent in you subject. The subject can be seen in terms of planes:
-identify
-separate
-disengage
-re-assemble
-shift and overlap,
in new and unexpected positions.

Art Classes with Ron Reynolds

Ron conducts landscape painting classes designed for students with some knowledge of oil or acrylic painting.

His courses involve the student in developing a creative approach to landscape painting. The emphasis is on colour and structure. Drawing also plays a major role.

As well as group classes, private sessions are available by arrangement.
