Visited Warrandyte Lately?
|
Located only 35 minutes drive north east from the city of Melbourne, Warrandyte is a great short escape from the city and suburbs, shopping and crowds. Its the closest destination from Melbourne that resembles a country town.
Warrandyte's primary drawcard for most people is the Yarra River and the tranquil walks and parklands that are accessible from a variety of locations in town and from State Parks. The locals have worked hard to preserve the original buildings and to maintain the bushland environment, since its establishment as a gold rush town in the 1850's. State Park's abound, especially along the Yarra, providing a haven for native wildlife, from kangaroos to wallabies, wombats to blue tongue lizards. Lately a much healthier River has seen local fish species and platypus returning in encouraging numbers.
Other activities include visiting historic goldfields, canoeing and swimming in the Yarra. In August, the Australian emblem - the brilliant yellow wattle is contrasted with early spring white blossoms along Yarra Street and the River paths, in addition to the many spring wildflowers and nesting birds abundant at that time. Warrandyte Artists Trails and Historical Walks
|
Along the Yarra River at Warrandyte are a number of 'Soundscopes' places where you can listen to the story of Warrandyte told from the perspective of those who lived at important historical moments such as the gold rush or the early bush fire periods. An example stands at the Warrandyte Stone House Cafe and Antique Shop near Tills Drive.
Further along Yarra Street, near the Bakery and by the River is the story of Clara Southern one of the Melbourne impressionists from the 1880's who painted and lived at Warrandyte. Her home stood just over the River, near Warrandyte bridge. She was one of three important Melbourne female impressionists who painted together - the others being Jane Sutherland and Jane Price.
