Artists Notes - Traditional Landscape Painter Walter Magilton

Best Individual Painting Award for an Australian Traditional Landscape Painting

Walter Magilton was the winner of The Australian Guild of Realist Artists (AGRA), Kevin A Taylor Award 2007 for the Best Individual Painting in AGRA's Australian Art Excellence Awards 2007 Exhibition. This award was for his landscape in oil 'Sunshine & Shadows - Yarra Valley' available in this Gallery.

Judge, Warren Curry commending Walter, stated that the artist can always be relied on to produce a high, even standard... The strength of light and shade, the fresh crisp colour produce a very strong work of art in the Australian tradition of landscape painting.

"Walter Magilton's landscapes fill the gallery with space, light and air. The farmlands and countryside...while losing nothing of their Australian ruggedness, are revealed with sensitive nuances one associates with the best in English landscape painting." Richard Walker, London Arts Review.

Early Training
From an early age, Walter's love of art and the natural environment ultimately led to a 27-year career in teaching art and craft, complimented by training in sculpture and art-metal work.

Style and Technique
Walter's deep and abiding love for the landscape, its many forms and moods, influences his constant search for painting challenges. He is a very versatile artist, creating in most popular mediums - oil, watercolour, pastel, gouache, pen and ink and more - and in many subjects and size - portrait, sea and landscape and still life, to name a few.

A technique applied by Walter to create the story of a painting is to take many photos of movement and light, to help build the mood and tone. The example of Granddaughters at the Water Wall is shown here, to the top right.

Together with his wife, Denise Keele-Bedford, installation artist, he has worked on a number of community art projects as well as collaborative painting with an aboriginal colleague and friend.
