Walter has received over 500 awards and commendations since 1975 in the mediums of oil, watercolour, pastel, gouache and black and white. Chief among these awards was the Australian Art Excellence Medallion 2005 (AGRA).
Subjects awarded include landscape, portrait, figure, still-life, seascape and flower studies.

Many commissions in churches and public buildings in Melbourne.
Represented in a large number of private and corporate national and international collections, including Art Bank, in 12 countries.
